Brick
Propane, Inc. is both a marketer and a wholesaler of propane
and propane related equipment. It is also a common carrier
transportation company that transports propane, anhydrous
ammonia and liquid fertilizer. The company's corporate office
is in Aberdeen, SD, with a branch office in Britton. The maintenance
shop for our subsidiary, Brick Transport, is located in Aberdeen,
SD. Bulk plants are located in Aberdeen, Britton and Claremont.
Brick
Propane began in 1955 when our founder, Norman Brick, opened
a small office in Aberdeen along 6th Ave SE. His bulk storage
was a 1000 gallon tank used to fill bottles. The first truck
was a 1949 Dodge with a twin barrel 1200 gallon tank. With
that truck, he was able to haul a 1000 gallon load of propane
that had to be purchased either in Aberdeen or Redfield.
in 1956, Norman obtained a "Skelgas"
franchise from Skelly Oil Company. The office was moved to
South Lincoln Street (about 1 block north of where the Federal
Building now stands). Skelgas marketed bulk propane, 100#
cylinders and appliances. The filled 100# Skelgas cylinders
were all trucked from the Skelgas District Plant in Watertown.
At this time, the name of the business was changed to Brick
Skelgas Service.
Norman convinced Skelgas that he needed a
bulk plant for the business to grow. In 1958, railroad property
was leased at 721 South State Street. This property was chosen
as it had a railroad siding for unloading tank cars. The bulk
plant was constructed with a 30,000 gallon storage tank. The
office and shop building were constructed the next year.
Norman's son, Jerry, started working for
the company in 1969 after graduating from high school and
while attending Northern State College.
In 1973, the business incorporated and changed
it's name to Brick Skelgas Service, Inc.
The decade of the 70's were difficult times
for all forms of energy, but the company was able to continue
to grow and expand. Natural gas had become in short supply
and there was a building boom taking place in Aberdeen. Many
new homes were connected to propane during this period.
in 1978, the company purchased the Amoco
Propane Plant in Aberdeen. This further strengthened it's
position in the Aberdeen area. As more propane was needed
to supply the needs of the customers, more suppliers were
found to ensure adequate supplies of the product. The company
purchased it's first transport in 1980 and eventually added
several more trucks and trailers.
The company continued as a Skelgas franchise
until 1986, when it became totally independent. It then became
known as Brick Propane, Inc. That same year, Selby Gas Company
was purchased.
In 1987, Norman retired as head of the company. Jerry and
Susan, his wife, purchased all of the stock of the corporation.
Dugdale's LP-Gas was purchased in 1988. This
added the Britton area to the markets serviced by Brick Propane,
Inc. The Dugdale name of the Britton plant was changed to
Brick Propane in 1997.
In 1998, the company purchased R-P, Inc.,
a common carrier transport company. This added several more
transport trucks and trailers and changed the scope of the
business from a private carrier to a common carrier. The transportation
side of the business became known as Brick Transport.
The assets of Selby Gas Company were merged together with two area propane co-ops and a rural electric co-op in 2002. This merger created North Star Energy, LLC. Brick Propane, Inc. remains a partner in the North Star Energy venture.
Brick Transport continued to expand and grow. In 2007, a separate corporation, Brick Transport Inc. was formed. A full service shop facility in Aberdeen was added in 2009 to maintain all of it's trucks and trailers. Brick Transport, Inc. is a regional carrier serving area marketers, shippers and commercial and agricultural end users in a nine state region.
Today, Brick Propane includes a fleet of propane bobtails and service vehicles to serve approximately 1500 customers in North and South Dakota.
The first priority of the company is to provide safe and efficient
